Using clouds to scale grid resources: An economic model

Infrastructure as a Service clouds are a exible and fast way to obtain (virtual) resources as demand varies. Grids, on the other hand, are middleware platforms able to combine resources from di erent administrative domains for tasks execution. Clouds can be used by grids as providers of devices such as virtual machines, so they only use the resources they need. This requires grids to be able to decide when to allocate and release those resources. Here we introduce and analyze by simulations an economic mechanism a) to set resource prices and b) resolve when to scale resources depending on the users demand. This system has a strong emphasis on fairness, so no user hinders the execution of other users' tasks by getting too many resources. Our simulator is based on the well-known GridSim software for grid simulation, which we expand to simulate infrastructure clouds. The results show how the proposed system can successfully adapt the amount of allocated resources to the demand, while at the same time ensuring that resources are fairly shared among users. D'un autre côté, les plates-formes de grilles béné cient d'intergiciels permettant de combiner les ressources provenant de domaines administratifs di érents pour l'exécution de tâches. Les grilles peuvent utiliser l'informatique de nuages en tant que fournisseur de machines virtuelles et ainsi se limiter à l'utilisation des ressources nécessaires. Cela implique que les grilles soient capables de décider quand allouer ou libérer les ressources. Dans ces travaux nous introduisons et analysons par simulations un modèle économique pour a) déterminer le prix des ressources et b) déterminer quand il faut étendre les ressources en fonction des demandes des utilisateurs. Le système mis en place tient fortement compte de l'équité, ainsi aucun utilisateurs ne vient perturber les tâches des autres utilisateurs en venant consommer trop de ressources. Notre simulateur est basé sur le simulateur GridSim que nous avons étendu pour simuler les infrastructure d'informatique en nuages. Les résultats montrent comment le système proposé peut avec succès adapter la demande à la quantité de ressources allouées tout en respectant l'équité entre les utilisateurs.
